Maine 201 Book Club: Cynthia Lord

20Dec2021

Rules by Cynthia Lord

From 5.30 pm until 6.30 pm

We couldn't go 12 moths without including a selection by Maine's beloved juvenile author Cynthia Lord, and we couldn't go wrong with any one of her titles! Finding and writing convincingly in others' voices is a talent, and Lord possesses it in oodles. In Rules, we explore the perspective of 12-year-old Catherine whose life is defined in many ways by her brother with autism.

Please note that our December discussion is pushed up to the third Monday of the month to better accommodate everyone's holiday plans. The book club discussion is on Monday, December 20 from 5:30pm to 6:30pm on Zoom. All readers welcome!

Rules by Cynthia Lord

Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She’s spent years trying to teach David the rules-from “a peach is not a funny-looking apple” to “keep your pants on in public”-in order to stop his embarrassing behaviors. But the summer Catherine meets Jason, a paraplegic boy, and Kristi, the next-door friend she’s always wished for, it’s her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal?
