Atlantic Clarion Steel Band: Workshop for All Ages

23Jun2021

Open-air workshop for the whole family! Try your hand at the steel pan and make some music!

From 2.00 pm until 3.00 pm

Bring your rhythm to the Island Community Center on Wednesday, June 23 for an open air workshop with the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band, and try your hand at making a steel pan sing. The music is infectious and fun for all ages, and if you have no rhythm, you just might leave with some by the end of the workshop. All are welcome to participate. Seriously, you’re never too young or too old to start learning something new, and the Atlantic Clarion players are pros at working with students of all ages and levels. Masks required to ensure everyone’s health and to facilitate working up close with the musicians. We welcome a free will donation to thank the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band for generously offering their time and talent.

Can't get enough? Come out to the ball field at 7pm on June 23 to enjoy a  Live For $5 concert performed by the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band in the Opera House summer season. More information and tickets available online.

The Atlantic Clarion is a professional steel band from Brooksville, Maine. The band performs high-energy concerts throughout Maine and New England. Founded in 1974 by Carl Chase, the band began to make pans, the instruments for steel bands, and then formed the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band, performing on the post office steps on Monday evenings in Brooksville. Most notably in 1990, the band performed at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City, and internationally in 2015 with 40 players from Maine as guests at the International Panorama in Trinidad. Today Atlantic Clarion is directed by his son Nigel Chase and made up of players who have grown up participating and performing with the educational pan programs organized by Nigel and Pan Institute of Blue Hill. Nigel and the Atlantic Clarion Steel Band continue to make the instruments, start steel bands, teach and perform in Maine and beyond.

The rain date is scheduled for Thursday, June 24. Please include your email and/or phone number in the registration to ensure you receive any communication about the event.
