Alfresco Authors: Sister City by Ian Woollen

24Jul2021

Reading and book signing with Isle au Haut summer resident and author Ian Woollen

From 12.30 pm until 1.30 pm

Ian Woollen’s fifth novel, Sister City, hails straight from the American heartland of the mythical Cave City, Indiana, and its sister city in the Yucatán, Ciudad de la Gruta. When the Sister City accord comes up for renewal on its 20th anniversary, a rubber stamp issue becomes a political hot potato to be decided on Election Day 2019. Sheriff Hooker stakes his mayoral run on an anti-immigrant platform, and El Plástico, the Mexican mayor, struggles against forces hell-bent on scuttling the referendum both at home and north of the border. PEN/Faulkner finalist, Ivelisse Rodriguez, calls Sister City, “a delightful book for our times…no matter how many walls humans put up between each other, we are inter-connected by history, by land, and by the best in us.”

Ian Woollen’s last novel, Muir Woods or Bust, won a 2017 INDIES Prize for Humor/Satire. His short fiction has appeared in a variety of journals, including The Massachusetts Review, SmokeLong Quarterly, Litro, Fiction Southeast and The Mid-American Review, from which he received a Sherwood Anderson Prize.

The Stonington Public Library is thrilled to host Ian Woollen in our Alfresco Authors series. Bring a bite to eat and a chair down to Small Cove Park, and join us for an open-air reading and book signing against the backdrop of Penobscot Bay. Sister City will be available for purchase.
