Join Anica Rissi at 2:00 PM for a story time featuring The Teacher’s Pet. This free, fun event is suitable for story lovers of all ages. The library is delighted to welcome  Anica back to the library she frequented as a kid. Not only did she borrow books but we’ve been told she would play her violin on the porch!

Get creative this summer! On Tuesdays, July 11-August 8, from 3:30 to 5:00 PM, young people (11-14) are invited to the library to express themselves through writing. Snacks and supplies are provided; bring your own creativity.

Join author Phyllis Chinlund for a book talk and discussion of her memoir Looking Back from the Gate: A Story of Love, Art, and Dementia. 

From the unique perspective of her two careers in geriatric social work and documentary film, Phyllis Chinlund confronts the cognitive decline of her beloved husband, photographer Ray Witlin. With the immediacy of journal entries, photographs, letters, and conversations recorded when they took place, Chinlund draws the reader directly into the couple’s lives and hearts. Over nearly a decade, as she struggles with the inevitable series of heart-wrenching decisions faced by every Alzheimer’s caregiver, Chinlund takes on additional challenges, moving from Manhattan to Maine, where she can afford to provide Ray with better care, and continually seek ways to nurture his creativity and enrich his daily experience, while pursuing her own career. Touching every note in the symphony of a long relationship, “Looking Back From the Gate” is a vivid portrait of a marriage and a testament to the endurance of love in the face of devastating mental and physical decline.

Friday, July 7, 4:00-5:30 p.m.

The Stonington Public Library will host a panel discussion on the restoration of gravesites and gravestones.

Robert Webster, membership secretary of the Maine Old Cemetery Association, will discuss his experiences restoring the Nathaniel and Elizabeth Farnham cemetery, a small, single-family cemetery in West Penobscot that involved a great deal of brush and tree clearing and stone re-setting. He and his wife continue to work on it as time allows.

Elizabeth Hotchkiss will present the work of the Majabigwaduce Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to reclaim and restore the cemetery at the West Brooksville Congregational Church. Lost stones have been located, others lifted and straightened, and all cleaned.
